Made in Guh, beneath the ascent to Abuna Yemata Guh in Ethiopia’s Gheralta highlands, this small series brings together portraits and landscapes shaped by the same striking terrain. The cliffs and open ground give the photographs a spare, monumental quality; the people remain their centre.

The photographs were made before the Tigray war. In May 2021, civilians were killed in Guh, according to witness accounts reported at the time. That later history is not shown in these images, but it now forms part of the place from which they came.
